«Πορευθέντες μαθητεύσατε πάντα τά ἔθνη» (Ματθ. κη’, 19).  Μέ τή βαρυσήμαντη αὐτή ἐντολή πρός τούς μαθητές του, ὁ Κύριος εὐλόγησε τήν ἔναρξη τοῦ εὐαγγελικοῦ ἔργου σέ ὅλα τά ἔθνη καί ἔτσι ὁ λόγος τοῦ Κυρίου  βγαίνει γιά πρώτη φορά ἔξω ἀπό τά στενά ὅρια τῆς Ἰουδαϊκῆς θρησκείας.

Ἡ Κύπρος μας βρισκόμενη στό «σταυροδρόμι» τριῶν ἠπείρων, ἀνέκαθεν δεχόταν κατά καιρούς μεγάλο ἀριθμό ἀλλοδαπῶν πού ἐγκαθίσταντο στό νησί γιά διάφορους λόγους.  Ὡς γνωστό, εἰδικότερα  τά τελευταία εἴκοσι χρόνια ὁ ἀριθμός τῶν ἀλλοδαπῶν στήν Κύπρο αὐξήθηκε ἀκόμη περισσότερο γιά δύο βασικούς λόγους.  Γιά ἐξασφάλιση ἐργασίας καθώς καί γιά φοίτηση σέ διάφορα ἰδιωτικά ἐκπαιδευτικά ἱδρύματα. 

Κατά τήν παραμονή τους στήν Κύπρο, ἀρκετοί ἀλλοδαποί ἐντυπωσιάστηκαν ἀπό τό πνευματικό κάλλος τῆς Ἐκκλησίας μας καί γι’ αὐτό ἐπέδειξαν ζωηρό ἐνδιαφέρον γιά νά μάθουν περισσότερα γι’ αὐτήν ἤ ἀκόμα καί γιά νά γίνουν μέλη της. Γι’ αὐτό καί ἡ Ἐκκλησία μας κλήθηκε ὅλο αὐτό τό διάστημα νά ἀνταποκριθεῖ στίς διάφορες πνευματικές ἀναζητήσεις αὐτῶν τῶν ἀνθρώπων.

Πρός τόν σκοπό αὐτό, τό 2008 μέ πρωτοβουλία τοῦ Θεοφιλέστατου Ἐπισκόπου Καρπασίας κ. Χριστοφόρου ἱδρύθηκε ἡ «Σχολή Κατηχουμένων».  Κατά καιρούς ὁ τρόπος λειτουργίας τῆς Σχολῆς βελτιωνόταν γιά νά ἀνταποκριθεῖ περισσότερο στίς ἀνάγκες τοῦ ἔργου τῆς κατήχησης.

Ὑπεύθυνός της Σχολῆς εἶναι ὁ Οἰκονόμος Ἰωάννης Κυπριανοῦ, ὁ ὁποῖος ἔχει ἀναλάβει τό συντονιστικό ρόλο γιά τήν ὁμαλή λειτουργία της.

Οἱ κατηχούμενοι προέρχονται τόσο ἀπό διάφορες θρησκεῖες (κυρίως τῆς Ἀνατολικῆς Ἀσίας), ὅσο καί ἀπό διάφορες χριστιανικές ὁμολογίες, ὅπως γιά παράδειγμα τόν προτεσταντισμό καί τόν ρωμαιοκαθολικισμό.  

Κάθε ἐνδιαφερόμενος ἐπικοινωνεῖ μέ τόν ὑπεύθυνό τῆς Σχολῆς, ὅπου καλεῖται σέ προσωπική συνέντευξη γιά νά διευκρινιστεῖ τό γλωσσικό καί πνευματικό του ἐπίπεδο. Συμπληρώνει ἐπίσης ὑπεύθυνη δήλωση ἀναφέροντας μερικά ἀπό τά προσωπικά του στοιχεῖα.  Μέ τή δήλωση αὐτή ὁ ὑποψήφιος δηλώνει ὅτι ἡ ἐπιθυμία του νά κατηχηθεῖ καί νά βαπτιστεῖ δέν συνδέεται μέ ὁποιοδήποτε προσωπικό κίνητρο ὅπως γιά παράδειγμα τήν ἐξασφάλιση ἄδειας παραμονῆς του στήν Κύπρο.  Μέ αὐτό τόν τρόπο ἡ Ἐκκλησία προσπαθεῖ νά περάσει τό μήνυμα στούς κατηχουμένους πώς ὁ βασικός σκοπός τῆς μεταστροφῆς τους δέν πρέπει νά εἶναι ἄλλος ἀπό τή συνειδητή ἀποδοχή τῆς ἀλήθειας τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου. 

Στή συνέχεια ἡ δήλωση τοῦ ὑποψηφίου φυλάγεται μέχρι νά συμπληρωθεῖ ἱκανοποιητικός ἀριθμός κατηχουμένων, οὕτως ὥστε νά δικαιολογεῖται ἡ ἔναρξη καινούργιου τμήματος κατήχησης. 

Στή Σχολή λειτουργοῦν δύο ἤ τρία τμήματα γιά ἀγγλόφωνους, ἐνῶ παράλληλα οἱ ἑλληνόφωνοι κατηχούμενοι στέλλονται στίς ἐνορίες τούς ὅπου τό ἔργο τῆς κατήχησής τους τό ἀναλαμβάνει ὁ κάθε προϊστάμενος. 

Ἡ ἔναρξη τῶν μαθημάτων γίνεται συνήθως τόν Σεπτέμβριο καί τά μαθήματα διεξάγονται δύο φορές τόν μήνα, ἐνῶ ἡ διάρκεια κάθε μαθήματος εἶναι περίπου δύο ὧρες.  Τά μαθήματα γίνονται σέ εἰδικά διαμορφωμένες αἴθουσες, οἱ ὁποῖες διαθέτουν κατάλληλο ἐξοπλισμό γιά ἀποτελεσματικότερη διδασκαλία. 

Ἡ διδακτέα ὕλη ἀποτελεῖται ἀπό 28 κεφάλαια τά ὁποῖα εἶναι τόσο θεωρητικά ὅσο καί πρακτικά. Χρησιμοποιεῖται ἄφθονο ἐποπτικό ὑλικό μέ τή χρήση ὑπολογιστή, οὕτως ὥστε ἡ κατήχηση νά πραγματοποιεῖται κατά ἕνα εὐχάριστο καί ἐποικοδομητικό τρόπο.

Κατά τή διεξαγωγή τῶν μαθημάτων, στούς κατηχουμένους δίδονται δωρεάν βιβλία κατήχησης, προσευχητάρι, βιβλιαράκι Θείας Λειτουργίας καθώς καί Ἁγία Γραφή στή γλώσσα τοῦ κάθε κατηχουμένου.

Παράλληλα, κατά τή διάρκεια τῆς διεξαγωγῆς τῶν μαθημάτων ἐνθαρρύνεται ἡ συμμετοχή τῶν ἀλλοδαπῶν στήν ἀγγλική λειτουργία πού τελεῖται τίς Κυριακές ἀνά δεκαπενθήμερο στό ὑπόγειο ἐκκλησάκι τῆς Ἁγίας Σοφίας Στροβόλου. 

Τά μαθήματα ὁλοκληρώνονται συνήθως τήν περίοδο τοῦ Πάσχα, ὅπου γίνεται ἡ ὁμαδική βάπτιση. Λίγο πρίν τή βάπτιση οἱ κατηχούμενοι θά ἐξομολογηθοῦν (χωρίς πετραχήλι), οὕτως ὥστε νά συνειδητοποιήσουν περισσότερο τή σημασία τοῦ πνευματικοῦ ἀγωνιστικοῦ φρονήματος, καθώς καί γιά νά ἀποκτήσουν περισσότερη οἰκειότητα μέ τόν κατηχητή τους πού θά εἶναι στή συνέχεια ὁ πνευματικός τους, ὅταν θά εἶναι πλέον νέα μέλη τῆς Ἐκκλησίας μας. 

Οἱ κατηχούμενοι φροντίζουν ἐκ τῶν προτέρων νά ἐξασφαλίσουν ἀνάδοχο πού θά συμμετέχει μαζί τους στή βάπτιση καί πού στή συνέχεια θά τούς βοηθήσει στήν ὁμαλή ἔνταξή τους στή ζωή τῆς ἐκκλησίας μέ σκοπό τήν πνευματική τους ἀνέλιξη. 

Στούς κατηχουμένους δίδονται ἐπίσης χιτῶνες τούς ὁποίους θά φορέσουν κατά τήν ὥρα τῆς τέλεσης τοῦ μυστηρίου. Ἐπειδή ἡ Ἐκκλησία γνωρίζει πώς πολλοί ἀπό τούς κατηχουμένους μπορεῖ νά ἀντιμετωπίζουν οἰκονομικά προβλήματα, κατόπιν ἐντολῆς τοῦ Θεοφιλεστάτου Ἐπισκόπου Καρπασίας, τόσο τά μαθήματα ὅσο καί οἱ βαπτίσεις τελοῦνται δωρεάν.

Πάντοτε, ἀπαρχῆς μέχρι σήμερα, ἡ κατήχηση θεωρεῖτο ὡς μία ἀπό τίς οὐσιαστικότερες διαστάσεις τοῦ ἐκκλησιαστικού ἔργου, ἡ ὁποῖα μάλιστα ἀναφερόταν σέ ὅλες τίς ἡλικίες καί σέ ὅλες τίς κοινωνικές τάξεις. Μέ βάση τήν ἀναφορά τοῦ Κυρίου στή σημασία τῆς κατήχησης πρίν ἀπό τό βάπτισμα τῶν ἐνηλίκων «ὁ πιστεύσας καὶ βαπτισθεὶς σωθήσεται» (Μαρκ. ιστ’, 16), θεωροῦμε πώς ἡ προετοιμασία κάθε κατηχουμένου γιά τό μεγάλο καί σωτήριο τοῦτο μυστήριο εἶναι θεμελιώδης καί ἀποτελεῖ ἀναπόσπαστο μέρος τῆς ὅλης διαδικασίας μεταστροφῆς του στήν Ὀρθόδοξη Ἐκκλησία.  Ἀπό τήν ἄλλη δε, γιά ὅλους ἐμᾶς ἀποτελεί πρότυπο διαρκοῦς ἀφύπνισης καί ἀναθέρμανσης τοῦ ζήλου, ὥστε νά ἐντρυφοῦμε καί νά ἐμβαθύνουμε ἁδιαλείπτως στή διδασκαλία τῆς Ἐκκλησίας μας.

“Go therefore and make people my disciples of all nations” (Matthew, 28, 19).  By this significant commandment towards his disciples, the Lord has blessed the beginning of the evangelical mission to all nations and consequently the logos of the Lord exits the strict borders of the Jewish religion. 

Cyprus, located at the “crossroad” of 3 continents, had always received a vast number of foreigners that settled on the island for several reasons.  As it is well known, particularly the last twenty years, the number of foreigners arriving to Cyprus has increased even further for two basic reasons.  To secure a job and to attend various private educational institutions. 

During their stay in Cyprus, many foreigners were in awe by the spiritual beauty of our church and for this reason they have shown keen interest in learning more about it or even to become its member.  Consequently during this period, our church was called to respond to the spiritual quests of these people. 

In 2008 as a response to increased interest from people his eminence bishop of Karpasia fr. Christoforos established  the “School of Catechumens”.  The operation of the school has been evolving occasionally with the aim to respond more effectively to the needs of the ministry of catechism.

The principal of the school is fr. Ioannis Kyprianou, who has taken over the co-ordinating role for its smooth operation. 

The catechumens come both from different religions (mainly of Eastern Asia) and several Christian denominations, for example Protestantism and the Roman Catholic Church. 

Every candidate contacts the principal of the school, where he is invited to a personal interview so that both his linguistic and spiritual level will be examined.  Then he fills a document of declaration, stating some of his personal information.  With this declaration the candidate declares that his desire to be catechized and baptized is not connected to any other personal motive, for example to secure a residence permit in Cyprus.  In this way the Church tries to pass the message to the catechumens that the main goal of their conversion should not be other than the conscious acceptance of the truth of the Gospel. 

Then the candidate’s declaration is set aside, until a sufficient number of catechumens is completed, so that the formation of a new class will be justified. 

At the school, every year two or three English speaking classes operate, where simultaneously the Greek speaking catechumens are sent to their parishes where the work of catechism is undertaken by the rector of each church. 

The lessons usually start beginning of September and they take place twice a month, while the duration of each lesson is about two hours.  The lessons are delivered in specially designed rooms, with appropriate equipment for more effective teaching. 

The curriculum is comprised of 28 chapters of which are both theoretical and practical.  Plenty of visual material is presented through the use of a computer and a projector enabling catechism to be carried out in a pleasant and stimulating way. 

During the lessons, the catechumens are given for free, a catechism book, a prayer book, a booklet of the divine liturgy as well as a Holy Bible in the mother language of each catechumen.   

Meanwhile, during the attendance at the lessons, the catechumens are encouraged to participate at the English liturgy which takes place on Sundays (every 14 days) at the underground chapel of Hagia Sophia church Strovolos. 

The catechism course is usually completed during the period of Pascha when the group baptism takes place.  Just before the baptism, the catechumens will have to go for confession (without a stole), so that they will comprehend more the significance of the spiritual struggle and to acquire more familiarity with the catechist who in turn will be their spiritual father when finally they will be members of our Church. 

The catechumens search beforehand for a godfather who will  participate with them in the sacrament of baptism and in turn to help them in their smooth integration in the life of the church aiming to their spiritual development. 

The catechumens are also given garments which will wear during the execution of the sacrament.  Since the church knows that many of the catechumens are facing financial problems, by the order of his eminence bishop of Karpasia, both the lessons and the baptism are held free. 

From the establishment of our Church until nowadays, catechism has always been considered one of the most fundamental activities of the church mission, which was always referring to all ages and social classes of people.  Based on the words of our Lord, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16, 6),  catechism before the sacrament of Baptism of adults is considered fundamental, that constitutes an integral part of the whole process of their conversion into the Orthodox Church.  On the other hand, for all of us it constitutes an example of a continuous awareness and rewarming zeal, so that we will always indulge and go deeper into the teachings of our church.
